This video clip is a 6 minute excerpt from a 28 minute video entitled "Spinning Lights #137". It is the latest installment in a long-running Manhattan public access television series called "Spinning Lights" which features the video art of Joel Cadman.

The primary inspiration for the series is the technical video-graphic phenomena known as "video feedback" which spontaneously creates visual patterns by pointing a video camera at a monitor while it is out-putting the camera's imagery. This process can generate detailed, complex geometric forms which have structures that parallel forms in nature such as snowflakes, flowers, spirals, clouds, etc. Such feedback imagery has formed the basis for the majority of video explorations created for the television series.

One of the main goals of these works is to induce a meditative, trance-like calm in the person viewing them. The project was developed to function as a counter-point to the trend in television and video which has moved in the direction of evermore frenetic and disjointed energy.

I made a Chameleons mix for friend who wasn't familiar with their music. Found the artwork I designed for it tonight by chance and I have to admit I think they look pretty sharp! I'm posting the designs for whomever wants to use them and make their own mix (if you already have the songs, and you should, right??).
On a similar note, I should make one for The Sound and put it up because I think they're sorely overlooked and just as good as The Chameleons.

I knew Momus offered fans the opportunity to have a song written about them for $1,000 and included on his Stars Forever album, but I couldn't remember why he needed the money. Turns out it was because he wrote a song about Wendy Carlos, a tribute no doubt, that Ms. Carlos obviously took offense to. All was settled out of court and he had to pay $30,000 as well as removing the offending song from an album.

One father had Momus write a song about his kid. I love his reaction when asked about the song...

"Noah's father, Michael Brill, a longtime Momus fan, says the decision to get involved with the project was a no-brainer. "It's pretty cool to have a song written about your son," he says of the track, which highlights his kid's love for sushi and tarantulas. "Noah sings it all the time." Bron Area: A Biography

To start at the beginning: Bron Area started life as a duo in March 1979, emerging from an embryo of musicians in Nuneaton. Martin Packwood and Steven Parker had been involved in a number of these before meeting a wider and more competent group of musicians. Notably among these was Peter Becker who supported and encouraged them in the early stages of Bron Area. With the reorganization of The Reluctant Stereotypes, resulting in the departure of Martyn Bates and Chris Dunne (later to drum on all later Bron Area records) the former arrived at a Bron gig to be introduced to Peter and thus Eyeless In Gaza came into being. Ambivalent Scale Recordings was later established and saw the release of Bron Area’s One Year cassette album and Fragile Sentences Ep as well as Eyeless In Gaza’s Kodak Ghosts Run Amok Ep and Kevin Harrison’s On Earth 2 cassette (later released as a Cherry Red album [remixed]). As Eyeless moved on to greater glory via their deal with Cherry Red Records, the momentum of Nuneaton’s music scene diminished, Bron Area subdued their efforts somewhat until David Barker of Glass Records, having heard 2 songs from the Alternative Sounds fanzines compilation tape Facet 1 asked them to appear on his Wonderful World of Glass Vol. 1 Lp at the end of 1981. So impressed was Mr. Barker that on the strength of a recent demo tape Bron Area were signed to Glass at the beginning of 1982. The first vinyl was a 12” Ep entitled ‘Different Phrases’ released in March ’82 and later released as a 7” on Posh Boy Records in the USA. Now, after the best part of 1982 being spent in the recording studio Bron Area’s first album is ready. The album is The Trees and the Villages – a title which suggests the sentiments of their present music. Although not quite as described in Stringent Measures fanzine “a modern day country music … with a little organic additive” it does through different means seek to fulfill the same role as that music. Martin Packwood: “The album doesn’t take risks, but I really don’t see how any music could claim to do so. The only thing you risk in being avant garde is that no one is going to buy the record and listen to what you have to offer. People take risks in their lives – in their decisions, their lifestyles and so on – not when they listen to a record.”

reminiscent of the bygone

As I mentioned a couple posts back (Apoptygma Berzerk--who more recently covered House of Love's "Shine On" with VILE results. Do yourself a favor and avoid this unless you want to puke all over yourself) my discovery of an old playlist dating back to the year 2000 for a friend. This led to the fruition to recreate a similar mix broadened to include other old favorites and similar themed songs in dreamy, ethereal, gothy? tone. I was surprised to find that most of the songs I still enjoyed, except for the odd track that proves that your tastes sometimes do change (ie. Trance to the Sun).
I'm also including old images that I photographed around the same time.
Here's the first in a trilogy on the theme of nostalgia.

Kevin Harrison - Views of the Rhine

Here's one for the kids who like to dance. Kevin Harrison is a recent discovery of mine who was first brought to my attention by way of the Cherry Red compilation Perspectives and Distortion. His song "People in Space" was so full of intriguing sounds and atmosphere. Crazy dub rhythms. He's also collaborated with Steven Parker of Bron Area on an album called "Against the Light."

Personally I don't see why Glass isn't as revered as a labels like Creation or Sarah. Scrolling through their list of releases and you'll see what i mean, mighty impressive!

Throwing a major curveball straight into the glove of NOSTALGIA. Bought Apoptygma's "Welcome to Earth" ten years ago (the year it was released) and used to play this song to death. Not too sure how I feel about it these days but set to this Twin Peaks edit I figured it was worth a post because I've not seen Twin Peaks in a while.
This is mostly a product of my discovering an old tracklist that I made for a friend around 2000 that has me WISTFULLY listening again to these tragic and grossly ethereal songs. I gotta admit, I still really like almost all of it. You'll see what I mean in the next few days when I put together a mix for the blog, hopefully raising a few eyebrows along the way! Wasn't Legend my favorite movie back then afterall?

Prefab Sprout? Daft name, and aren't they adult contemporary-smooth-semi-sophisti-pop? Yes! and No. For starters, I've yet to give into the allure of The Blue Nile, a group I've dismissed for years, so please go easy on me (addressing myself here, mostly. I'm sure all you reading are cooler than me and know the group well). I must of given Prefab Sprout at least one half assed chance in the distant past and obviously wasn't hooked by their enchanting sound. Today I'm handing myself over to Prefab Sprout and am fully prepared to make lofty statements about them. They wrote two of the best pop songs I've ever heard. One being their self released debut single, and the other the opening song off their second LP.

They debuted in 1982 with their self-released single, "Lions In My Own Garden: Exit Someone" - songwriter Paddy McAloon wanted a song title where the first letters of the words spelled out "LIMOGES" (the French city where his former girlfriend was staying at the time).
see, isn't that nice? now listen to the song and see how many times you'll play it over and over again.

Faron Young, if i recall correctly, was written in response to people who listen to country-western in the north, or more generally in cities, as it isn't relevant. Later on Paddy McAloon (Prefab's singer/songwriter) rebuked this sentiment by saying that people listened to Country Western because it's honest music. Glad he wised up. oh, found the quote: “This shows you how stupid I am - it’s a song wondering why people like country & western music when they live in the industrial north. I thought, ‘Why do they listen to all these things about cowboys and farmers and grain?’ and then 20 years later, I suddenly think, ‘It’s because C&W deals with real emotions.’ Take that!” - NME, June 20, 1992

Newell retraces the band's beginnings: "Lol Elliott and I became firm friends with much in common: psychedelic music, Beatles, Bonzos, Small Faces, XTC, Teardrop Explodes and Todd Rundgren. In November of 1980 we set to work in my cottage doing music on a hand-cranked, mud-cooled, reel-to-reel, sound-on-sound tape recorder. Lol played drums and banged and twanged things. I played guitar and we started doing these marvelous ersatz pop songs. The rule was two songs had to be written and recorded every Monday before my miserable girlfriend (at the time) got home from work and told us to stop. We both worked in a restaurant as part-timers. He was the cleaner and I was the washer-up. Round about March of 1981, we found we'd got about 40 songs, so we picked 18 of them and sent them to Sounds magazine, who said they were really good. We said anyone who wanted a copy had to send a blank tape or 50 pence (about a dollar). This tape was called Blow Away Your Troubles. It was in flawed mono with dropouts and hiss... but very good fun.
Lots of people sent in for the tape, so we kind of came into existence by default really," admits Newell. "At this point we had to think of a name. We called ourselves the Soft Humans for about a month before we became the Cleaners From Venus (we nearly chose the Brotherhood of Lizards and the Peach Wellingtons). We chose that name partly because we were 'cleaners,' partly because it rhymed and was silly (we'd hate to come on too serious), and the 'Venus' thing. Lol and I were brought up on sixties TV as kids and still had a Twilight Zone idea of aliens being green with special powers, etc. It's sort of a hangover from acid/deviant/comic book humor."

Virginia Astley "Love's A Lonely Place To Be"

Virginia Astley recorded one of, if not the most, unique and beautiful albums of the 1980s. Don't be surprised if you've never heard of her. She's buried in obscurity, at least here in the States. Her earlier material made a splash in the indie charts over in England, and I think she's probably bigger in Japan.
I'm posting her first single, "Love's A Lonely Place To Be". I personally feel these are insightful and honest lyrics, and really sad! Detailing a dreary relationship, the lryics are matched with a pretty saccharine piece of music which has often been described as "Christmasy". If you're put off by her voice (I'm not), then do check out her album "From Gardens Where We Feel Secure," the album that I referred to in the first sentence; it's mostly instrumental. I'm certain till my death that I'll regard it as one of my favorites and play it constantly for my children.

several weeks ago i dreamt that I found the 7" single for New Risen. Before I go any further I'd like to say that I had never seen this single, nor was i even sure that the song had been released as a single. I just liked the song and then had a strange dream. The next day I went to a record store and there it was in the recent arrivals! the only difference was that it was a 12" single. It was a little pricey, but after having that dream I couldn't pass it up.

like Lester Bangs said of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, the Calvin Johnson Has Ruined Rock For An Entire Generation 7" can be used to clear up your head when you wake with a hangover (and "to prepare you for what's in store the rest of the day"). I woke up slightly hungover today, but didn't test this till much later in the day. Maybe it was the food or green tea that eased my agony, but hearing this certainly didn't hurt.

Has the "Calvin" 7" gotten any comments? I cracked up when I saw the sleeve.

ALAN: Well, Calvin has not been reached for comment... I was always more of a Heather fan, anyway... Jon Fine came up to me accusing me of "stealing" the title from (Sub Pop's) Nils Berstein, who originally coined the phrase. When I pointed out that I credited "all songs" on the record to Nils, he confessed that he hadn't actually bought or even heard the record, just saw the cover. It's not that much of a "statement," just a t-shirt Nils gave me. I have a t-shirt that says "Wheelchair Sports" on it, I could have called it that too. By the way, there's a track on the new Free Kitten LP called "Alan Licht Has Ruined Music For An Entire Generation."
